Chapter Nine

Ten days had passed since Silver and Keridwen escaped the soldiers. It had also been four days since Keridwen's last spanking. After that first one, while she'd been big, Silver had given her a smaller one before bed that night, and then a third two days later, at the completion of the grounding that Silver had thought appropriate for her encounter with the soldiers and messenger.

Keridwen had been right in assessing that Silver wouldn't be happy about it, and although Keridwen tried to argue that the ends justified the means, Silver was more upset about the fact that she'd left, put herself in danger, and then tried to cover it up… again. In the end, Keridwen was forced to agree, and although she promised to be more careful in the future, she knew she would have done it again if it meant keeping them safe.

As the days passed, they climbed higher into the hills and further away from civilization. Keridwen still wanted to return to the capital, but she also knew that by now the whole of the army was probably looking for them. The longer they hid, the less alert the army would be. She wasn't fond of the idea, but if they could manage a few weeks or even months away, it would make it easier to get into the capital unnoticed. Once she accomplished that task, then she and Silver could leave, for good if need be, and again return to the hills or even cross the mountains.

Two days ago, Keridwen had found a cave on the top of a hill. The cave itself wasn't much, but it was good shelter from the elements, and there was fresh water nearby. The hill was high enough that Keridwen could easily see for miles in each direction. Climbing the giant oak just to the side of the cave only enhanced her view. For now she was satisfied with their safety, and had told Silver that they would stay a few days before moving on.

This seemed to make Silver happy, which in turn made Keridwen happy. Although Silver had told her numerous times that she traveled for a living, she knew that Silver wasn't fond of the long rides or having to repack her world every day. At least staying for a while would give her a chance to do a little nesting. Unfortunately the nesting soon turned to boredom, which Silver had taken out on Keridwen. Almost daily she would call Keridwen away from whatever task she was involved in and make her go down to the stream to wash up.

It was tedious and even a bit embarrassing, as Silver insisted on cleaning Keridwen herself. The stream wasn't even deep enough to be effective for cleaning, so it ended up being more of a wet rub down than anything productive. It had also earned Keridwen more than one swat and so she wasn't looking forward to today's bath.

"Keridwen? Keridwen?" Silver called from the mouth of the cave.

Keridwen, who was scouting up top in a nearby tree, froze at the sound of her name.
